What is UDL?
Classrooms are highly diverse, and
curriculums should be designed around diversity. UDL minimizes barriers and
maximizes learning for all students. "Universal" means the content can be understood
by everyone regardless of the intellect, strength or background. Learning is a
complex term, the brain has sections for recognition, skills, and strategies and
caring and prioritizing. Students need to be inspired by the curriculum to do
all these things. “Universally designed” curriculum can apply to all students
regardless of abilities.
Applied to the design of a flexible
curriculum, UDL is used as a framework to make learning goals, methods, materials
and assessments accessible to everyone. Teachers should look at what content
should be learned and what barriers need to be overcome. Providing multiple
means of representation is important, including types of graphics, animation, multimedia
and support for vocabulary. Multiple means of action and expression for
students to be given feedback and support. Providing multiple means of
engagement is important, so all students are appealed to and engaged with the
work.
