-       Profile of individual student
o   About Christian
§  Name: Christian
§  Gender: Male
§  Grade: 4th
§  Interests:
·      Video games
·      Baseball
·      Drawing
o   Strengths
§  Christian is personable, intelligent and has a good sense of humor. He loves to play sports and video games in his free time. He is great at writing, has a high artistic ability and enjoys math activities. He scores high on his exams and his homework when he completes his assignments.
o   Weaknesses
§  Christian has trouble paying attention in class and has been diagnosed with dyslexia. He struggles with decoding. He is at a 2nd grade reading level although he is in 4th grade. He does participate but has trouble concentrating and disrupts the class often. He gets bored with the content easily which causes him to act out and distract the other students. He has some trouble expressing his ideas on paper but has no issues explaining them verbally. He seems to be lazy when it comes to writing in complete sentences and finishing assignments but when he does, he usually scores very high on his exams.
o   Learning needs
§  Christian was provided with assistive technology devices. Specifically, inside and outside of the classroom he is given access to special apps and websites that can help him and his parents track his homework. These apps can help him to read better if he does not understand a word or a question the applications assist him to understand.
§  Christian needs more attention after school as well and is given the opportunity to sit with the teacher’s assistant or with a tutor to go over work he might not have understood. He is given more time on exams and assignments when necessary.
o   Classroom environment
§  Christian needs a lot of one-on-one attention and works best independently. When he works in a group, he gets distracted and often disrupts the work of the rest of the group.
§  Christian has a few pull-outs specializing in one-on-one work and an aide to help him read his assignments and concentrate more. In the classroom, he needs more attention from the teacher who is often busy with the whole class so an aide or a teacher’s assistant can sit with him and ensure he is paying attention and behaving correctly.
§  Christian often has to sit independently instead of in the group of desks with the rest of the students to avoid disruption. This may make him feel singled out but it also helps the teachers to assist him and give him the attention he needs.
o   Instructional tasks
§  Specific things Christian needs to be able to do to reach expectations and make progress include:
·      Specific one-on-one communication
·      Instructional difficulties
·      Tracking and assessing his participating and productivity
·      Environmental control
·      Activities that support his curricular goals
o   Technology application
§  Christian is provided with technological tools such as an iPad in the classroom and access to an online or mobile web app.  This app has all of the lessons, homework, assignments, and tests assigned by the teacher according to the curriculum.
§  The technology has a tool that provides Christian with assistance with reading and writing. If he does not understand a word or particular vocabulary it helps him to define, understand and use those words. It also will read aloud to him when he cannot read a particular passage.
§  Since he is high-energy and has trouble concentrating, an online app with an interactive game is provided to him at least once daily. This grabs his interest and gives him the opportunity to move around a lot and get his energy out, whether by singing, dancing or jumping around for five to ten minutes once throughout the day.
o   Accommodations
§  Christian is provided with the technology necessary to help him read and write effectively
§  Christian and his parents are well versed on the utilization of the technology
§  Constant communication occurs between Christian, his parents and the teacher, as well as any teacher’s assistants
§  In the classroom, Christian is provided with his own learning area and one-on-one time with an assistant.
§  He is not often put in large groups if there is a group project he will be placed in the smallest group.

  2. Hi Elena,

You have great organization which seems like it will be a huge help in getting students to the right assistive technology tools. I know a lot of schools are trying to move away from pull-out services, and you mentioned that Christian sits apart from the other students. I'm curious what methods have been used to integrate him more into the class both physically and with his pull-out services.

  3. Great job really focusing in on what Christian needs. You seem to be a great teacher and know what to expect from them. It is also great that your student's parents are involved in their child's education.

Field Observation Reflection - Journal Entries

Elena Wiener Field Observation Journal Entries EDPC 610 Summer 2019 Journal Entry 1: I am beginning my field observation in a school in North Bellmore called the Saw Mill Road Elementary School in a 4 th grade class taught by Mrs. Gallagher. The school is not particularly diverse, most students are Caucasian and from middle-class income families. From my first day I did notice a few things that stuck out to me about some students in particular. In terms of students with learning disabilities, two of the children are at a 2 nd grade reading level. The school provides several tools and strategies to assist them with completing the coursework and attempting to help them overcome their issues and get on the same page as the rest of the class. There is an application on both the web and on mobile that is made available to the students, parents and the teacher both inside of the classroom and out. This program helps students read certain words they might n...
